Good Friday: What’s good about a terrible Friday?

TOMORROW is Good Friday; a day Christians commemorate the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ.
It is also known as Holy Friday or Black Friday and the date changes every year as it is calculated based on the lunar cycle.
The name Good Friday originated from the English term “God’s Friday”, which overtime evolved into Good Friday. In German, Good Friday is called Karfreitag or sorrowful Friday.
Good Friday constitutes an essential part of a 40-day penitential period called Lent, which for some Christians, begin with Ash Wednesday.
This day is observed during Holy Week as part of the Paschal Tridiuum, it celebrates the passion, crucifixion, death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus as portrayed in the Gospel.
According to the Holy Bible, Jesus was arrested and sentenced to death by crucifixion by the Roman authorities under the rile of Pontius Pilate.
The Jewish religious leaders had condemned Jesus of blasphemy for claiming to t be the son of God. They were agitated by Jesus’ acts that they brought him to the Romans.
Christians often portray the Friday of the Holy Week as a sorrowful day because of Jesus’ suffering and death. Jesus’ crucifixion is the fulfillment of God’s salvation plan for mankind from sins, death, and eternal separation from him.
Good Friday is a solemn and reflective day for Christians, reminding them of the sacrifice God made for their salvation.
Good Friday is significant and relevant to all Christians. Jesus’ suffering and death on the cross is a black and bleak event. But without his death, He would not be resurrected to show the Glory of God.
However, instead of commemorating the day as a sorrowful day, Christians celebrate it because God showcased his victory over sin and death.
The significant of Good Friday lies in the belief that Jesus willingly sacrificed himself on the cross for the forgiveness of sins.
Christians believe that through his death and resurrection, Jesus opened the way for humanity to be reconciled with God.
Good Friday holds a significant place in the Christian faith, as a solemn day of reflection on the sacrifice and love of Jesus Christ and a reminder of the importance of faith, forgiveness, and redemption.
In addition to its religious significance, Good Friday has also played a significant role in the history and culture of many countries.
In several Christian denominations, the day is marked with Church services which are sometimes solemn, as they reflect on the suffering Christ went through to save mankind according to o the Bible.
The holy day is also commemorated by carrying out reenactments of the events which led to Jesus’ crucifixion, known as Passion of Jesus.
Commenting on why the day is called Good Friday, Prince Emma Oshoma, of Vine Branch Church, Ibadan, described the day as coming forth of a child which starts with birth pains, noting that the salvation of mankind, a plan put in place before the foundation of the world was on the cross paid by the sacrifice of the sinless son of God whose blood atoned for the sin of man.
According to him, the day is good in that it was a day Jesus Christ went to hell as a substitute for the judgment of the sin of man.
Oshoma buttressed his points with a Bible verse taken from Hebrew 10:4, which says, for it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.
Contributing, Pastor Alayo Adedokun said that the day is a terrible Friday, going by what Jesus went through but instead of calling it that, Christians called it Good Friday, which is the day Jesus Christ had the work finished on the cross at Calvary through his death and resurrection to redeem man.
In his submission, a Catholic Catechist, Mr Andy Odogwu , noted that Good Friday is good because it is the reenactment of the passion and death of our Lord Jesus Christ, which brought man’s reconciliation with God, after the sin of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden; an act which is altogether good and monumental in the history of mankind.
Also speaking, MrDonatus of the Catholic faith said that Good Friday is at once, sorrowful, and delightful. He stated that it is sorrowful in the sense that it commemorates the passion and death of Jesus Christ, and it is delightful because it secured salvation for mankind from the bonds of sin.
“In essence Good Friday is good because it initiated the redemption of man,” MrDonatus said.
