Two police officers of the Enugu State Police Command on routine stop-and-search duty were killed by gunmenin Uwani, yesterday.

Spokesperson of Enugu State Police Command, Daniel Ndukwe, confirmed the incident,today.

According to him, armed hoodlums operating in SUVs opened fire on the police operatives on routine stop-and-search duty at Osadebe Street, along Campus Gate Road, by Kenyatta Market.

“Police Operatives serving in Uwani Police Division of Enugu State Command, while on routine stop and search duty at Osadebe Street, along Campus Gate Road, by Kenyatta Market Enugu, were today, 26/03/2023 at about 11.30 am, attacked by armed hoodlums in their numbers and operating in SUVs, who suddenly opened fire on them.

Many of the hoodlums escaped with varying degrees of fatal gunshot injuries in the ensuing gun duel, while two of the Operatives, who sustained severe gunshot injuries, were moved to the hospital, where they were confirmed dead and their corpses deposited in the mortuary for preservation.

Consequently, a manhunt of the assailants, which was immediately launched, resulted in the miscreants abandoning the black-coloured Mercedes Benz ML 350 4Matic Jeep they used for the operation along Enugu/Port-Harcourt Road, Enugu.

The vehicle, riddled with gunshots and blood stains, has been recovered. The recovery of the vehicle and the signs thereof corroborates the preliminary investigation, which suggests that at least two of the hoodlums were neutralized,” he said.

Also, no fewer than two people lost their lives while 10 people were injured in a road crash which occurred at Jubilee Area of IkareAkoko, the headquarters of Akoko North-East Local Government Area of Ondo State.

Commander of Federal Road Safety CorpsIkare Unit, Mr.AlabiOluropo, confirmed the incident.

According to him, the accident occurred on Sunday was said to have involved a Toyota Hiace 14-passenger commercial bus with the number plate Kaduna ZAR 288 XF, coming from the northern part of the country.
