ANAMBRA State Governor, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo has felicitated with the West African Examination Council, WAEC as it marks its 71st Anniversary.
Mr. Governor, represented by the Commissioner of Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh at the event which took place at WAEC, Awka Headquarters, Nise, said that WAEC has been a household name, a tradition handed down from generation to generation, adding that it has been 70 decades of excellence on the part of WAEC.
She expressed Mr. Governor’s commendation, saying, WAEC is a laudable initiative put in place to move academics in West African forward, while adding that the organisation has never failed in this drive.
“I want to thank WAEC, for holding forte these years and for dishing out human capitals into the five member countries which are involved in WAEC.
I want to thank on behalf of Mr. Governor, the Head of the Nigeria National Office of the West African Examination Council, Mr. Patrick Ehidiamen, for his stellar administration in the conduct of credible examinations in Nigeria and appeal to WAEC to look into some of their laws.
“In our fight to sanitise our society, in our fight to produce human capitals who are useful at home and exportable abroad, in our efforts to produce whole human beings capable of contributing to the development of our society, we appeal to WAEC to look into some of their laws and give a human face to punishments.”
Commissioner Chuma -Udeh expressed the view that WAEC bring the full weight of their law to bear on the students caught in examination malpractice than flagging the entire school for an offense committed by a few students.
Earlier, Mr. Uduakpan, the Branch Controller, WAEC, Awka, in his address, stated that this is the first time since the outbreak of coronavirus in 2020, the council is celebrating with stakeholders and friends of the council.
He appreciated the overwhelming support of the council stakeholders, especially Mr. Governor, Prof. Charles Soludo, and his unwavering support of education and the fight against examination malpractice in the state.
The 71st anniversary was marked with fun-filled activities. A debate competition between St Patrick College, Awka, and Loretto Special Science School, Adazi Nnukwu formed the highlight of the day.
Celebration of West African Examination Council Day is an annual event in the council and is celebrated on the 16th of March, each year.
