IN LINE with  Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s agenda  to create a clean, healthy, livable and smart megacity that would attract investors from all over the world, Anambra State Commissioner for Environment, Felix Odimegwu has  inspected  facilities of the Abattoir at Kwata Meat Market, Awka.

During the tour, Dr Odimegwu, represented by the permanent secretary of the ministry, Mrs Ngozi Iwouno, charged the management of the market to adhere fully to the code of conduct of the Public Health Department of the Ministry of Environment and make sure that their mode of operations is properly guided by licenses and approvals given by the ministry.

He expressed  happiness with the level of improvement seen in the meat market –  the borehole, the sanitary system, the septic tank, the conducive waiting room, and the cleanliness of the slaughterhouse, but  frowned at the level of waste disposal and water ways which did not meet with the standard of the state government.

He  warned that proactive measures should be taken so that the abattoir will meet the standard required in the state, reiterating  that animals must be inspected and certified by veterinary doctors before being taken to the slaughterhouse and documentation should be kept because of the remittal of taxes to the government.

The Market Chairman, Chief Charles Okafor, thanked the Governor Soludo, who is doing good work in the state and creating a conducive environment for them in the market. He also thanked the commissioner, Odimegwu, who Mr Governor is using to do the work in the Ministry of Environment.
