.Abducted naval officer rescued in Anambra

AT least five persons died while many others sustained various degrees of injuries during a shootout that ensued when masked gunmen in a Sienna bus invaded Ndiegoro Police Station around Ohanku Road by Iheorji Junction in Aba, Aba North Local Government Area, Abia State, yesterday.

Eyewitnesses said the gunmen opened fire immediately they arrived before security operatives on duty retaliated leading to a crossfire that killed two police officers and a passer-by who was hit by stray bullet.

According to them, two bandits were also felled down in the bullet rain that rent the air around the area, leading to stampede as people ran for safety in different directions

Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of Abia State Command, Geoffrey Ogbonna, confirmed the attack but debunks reports of invasion of Ndiegoro community by police operatives.

According to Ogbonna, anti-riot police patrol team arrived to neutralise the bandits with three locally-made guns, live cartridges, one machete, one dagger and native charms recovered from the gang.

Ogbonna also said that police have launched a manhunt for those that fled from the scene after their attack was foiled.

In a related development, a naval officer kidnaped over the weekend in Onitsha, Anambra State, has been rescued.

A source from the State Naval Outpost, who pleaded for anonymity, said the officer, simply identified as Ozuowa, was rescued by the military without any ransom paid.

It will be recalled that troops of Nigerian Army have been deployed at entry and exit points in Onitsha on stop and search following the development.
