Earthquake kills 46, injures manyin Indonesia

Rescuers making efforts to save persons trapped in the damaged buildings 1

NO FEWER than 44 people have been killed while hundreds were injured as a shallow 5.6-magnitude earthquake rocked an island of Java, Indones, today.

Thousands of buildings were also destroyed by the landslide.

The quake was centred in Cianjur region of West Java but felt as far away as the Indonesian capital, Jakarta.

According to data obtained from verified website of United States Geological Survey, “there have been dozens of people killed. So far, 46 people have died.”

Quoting a spokesman for the local administration in Cianjur town, Herman Suherman, the agency also said “as many as thousands of houses could have been damaged in the quake, because there are other casualties without a specific figure in surrounding villages. the information for now, in this hospital alone, nearly 20 died and at least 300 people are being treated.Most of them had fractures from being trapped by the ruins of buildings.”

Similarly, local media said a hospital, an Islamic boarding school and shops in the town were severely damaged by the quake.
