Bloody street brawls between rival cult gangs have claimed no fewer than 10 lives in Ilorin, Kwara state capital and Abuja Estate in Ahoada East Local Government Area of Rivers State.
Suspected rival cultists had between Monday and Wednesday last week turned Okelele community, Ilorin East local government area to a war theatre as they allegedly engaged in reprisal killings.
The upsurge in cultists’ clashes in the area informed the people of Okelele in Ibagun ward’s resolve to get rid of criminal activities in the area.
Rivers’ clash occurred on Saturday night between the Icelanders and Greenlanders cult gangs.
There were reports of serious shooting for over two hours while the incident lasted as residents were said to have remained indoors.
Police spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, said it was a supremacy battle, saying operatives had been deployed to the area.
“In what appears to be fight for supremacy, five persons are reportedly killed. The names of the deceased persons are Chukwuemeka Kingsley, 36, Chibuike ThankGod, 28. Three others corpses are yet to be identified,” she said.
Head of Ibagun community (Alangua), Malam Sakariyau Iyanda Ilufemiloye in collaboration with the leadership of Ibagun Progressive Union (IPU) summoned an emergency meeting of all the family heads, religious leaders, elders and leaders of the community yesterday.
Special Adviser to Kwara State Governor on Strategy, Saadu Salahu, urged religious leaders to preach against all forms of criminality.
