Rape gang prowling onitsha

THREE persons prowling Nkisi area of Onitsha for unsuspecting girls and women to gang rape have been arrested but one escaped.

The suspects were nabbed by operatives of National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in Person (NAPTIP) and vigilante agents following a tip-off by residents of the area.

A media aide to Anambra State Commissioner for Women and Social Affairs, Chidimma Ikeanyionwu, stated this during a press briefing in Awka, yesterday.

Giving the suspects’ names as Sunday, Emelie, Chiedu and Nwa Awọ, Ikeanyionwu said luck ran out of the ‘syndicate’ when operatives of the two agencies caught them after raping one of their victims who was a 13-year-old girl.

Ikeanyionwu said activities of the gang has made girls and women to dread the area as they always stalk around, looking for victims to rape, with no week passing without anyone falling prey to them since the year.

According to Ikeanyionwu, the suspects have been handed over to the police and would be charged to court soon.

She, therefore, urged members of the public to keep volunteering discrete information on activities of hoodlums in the areas to security agencies in support of government’s clampdown on criminality in the state.
