Governor Chukwuma Soludo has commended the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Anambra State Council for adhering to professionalism in the discharge of their duties.

Giving the commendation during the 2022 NUJ Press Week / Man of the Year Award by the council at the Godwin Ezemo International Press Center in Awka, Governor Soludo, represented by the Commissioner for Information, Sir Paul Nwosu, observed  that despite the opportunities provided by the social media, it still lacks the essentials of journalism that involves disseminating information that has been fact-checked, accurate and well-structured before publication .

He praised the union for an eventful week and called for social media regulation to ensure accountability and accuracy, even as he urged journalists to continue to protect the ethics of the profession.

Senatorial candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC) for Anambra Central Senatorial District in the 2023 general elections, Chief Kodilichukwu Okelekwe, reminded journalists of their roles in the forthcoming elections, which includes ensuring that the citizens are well educated on the right qualities of a leader.

Chief Okelekwe praised the state government for its efforts to combat insecurity, as well as the Nigeria Union of Journalists for its accurate projection of activities in the state and the nation at large.

Chairman, NUJ, Anambra State Council, Dr Emeka Odogwu, in his remarks, described the NUJ Woman of the Year, Dame Adaora Umeoji, Deputy Managing Director of Zenith Bank, as a woman who has played a tremendous role in the society through her humanitarian activities and investment in the state to bring about development, adding that the award is well deserved.

 An award as Anambra State NUJ Matriarch was also given to the Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic, Paul University, Awka, Professor Stella Okunna.

Speaking on the theme, ‘Traditional Media and Threat of the Social Media: Implications for National Development’, the keynote speaker, Mr Victor Ogene, who is the candidate of the Labour Party for Ogbaru Federal Constituency in next year’s general election stated that as the internet brought globalisation to the world, the use of social media platforms also dominated.
