S’East Govs urge political solution to Kanu’s case

Governors of South East States of Nigeria have called on the federal government to assist the people of zone in beefing up security bearing in mind that election is around the corner.

The call was part of a communiqué released by  South East Governors Forum, after a meeting, which was read out by Ebonyi State Governor and Chairman, South East Governors Forum, David Umahi, held at Government House, Enugu.

The meeting had in attendance, Anambra State Governor, Prof Charles Soludo, represented by his deputy,  Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezim, Governor Okezie Ikpezu of Abia State, Hope Ozodimma of Imo State,  represented by his deputy, Prof Placid Njoku.

According to Umahi,  “we the Southeast Governors as a body congratulate our dear brother, Governor of Anambra State,  Prof Charles Soludo and his deputy,  Dr Ibezim for their victory in the gubernatorial election.

“We deliberated on the best ways to help our people and also restore their confident to go about their businesses and we all agreed to start a joint security patrol in all our major highways in South East. This will commence before 1 December, 2022, so we are going to put funds together to purchase vehicles to ensure 24 hours of joint patrol of security people in most of our highways in South East”.

“On the issue of flooding, we commend the states and the federal government on their efforts to alleviate the sufferings of the victims of the recent flood menace in the country. We hope , however, that while the immediate solution is being given by the federal government, long term solution will be discussed because that is what is most desirable knowing well that this has become an annual thing and with the climate changes, nobody knows how the next year will be like”.

He further explained that, South East Governors have decided to put force together   to further assist the victims of flooding in the five states in the zone. This will be a common project to show synergy and sympathy to all our brothers and sisters who have suffered so much as a result of this unfortunate situation”.

“We also plead with the federal government to initiate action in the dredging of rivers in the South East to ameliorate the destructions of houses, farmlands and properties. We call on the federal government to come to the aid of the victims in terms of rehabilitation of the internally displaced persons.

“South East Governors have noted the purported statement that it was the South East Governors that formed Eastern Security Network (ESN). It’s quite unfortunate and misinformation and we have washed our hands from such statement because it’s not true. Everyone knows that what we formed was Ebubeagu and Forest Guide. These two local security was extensively discussed not only among Southeast Governors but with most of the leaders and we agreed”.

“Southeast Governors are watching with keen interest the development with respect to the case of Nnamdi Kalu.  We believe that a political solution is very much possible in the circumstance and so we ask the federal government that we are disposed as a people for political solution in this regard”.
