Second Niger Bridge

FINALLY, construction work on Second Niger Bridge project has been completed and the facility ready for human and vehicular traffic.

Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, stated this in Abuja, during the unveiling of President Muhammadu Buhari’s scorecard series (2015-2023), yesterday.

Explaining that the bridge would be ready for use before December, Fashola said work is remaining only an access road connecting the Delta State end.

“Second Niger Bridge has been completed. What is remaining is a four kilometre interchange road at the Asaba end and two-kilometre out of another seven- kilometre link road at the Onitsha end. Our priority is to open the bridge to traffic by December so that those travelling for the season will do so at ease. We are committed to opening the bridge to traffic by December and I can assure you that, with the level of work done, the set target will be met,” Fashola said.

Speaking on other efforts by President Buhari-led administration to mark up road infrastructure, Fashola said “the first thing we did when we came into power was we expanded our budget on road infrastructure, sought alternative sources of funding through SUKUK, Infrastructure Tax Credit Scheme.

Along this line, we had completed 12 road projects covering about 896km, commissioned and handed them over to different communities while government is executing 83 road rehabilitation projects in federal tertiary institutions across the country with 66 projects completed and 46 commissioned.”

It will be recalled that efforts had continued among successive administrations to ensure that a new bridge was put in place to complement the existing Niger Bridge which experts was over 50 years old.
