Rape case: Greenwood granted bail

Mason Greenwood

MANCHESTER United footballer, Mason Greenwood has been granted bail following a private hearing at Minshull Street Crown Court in Manchester.

The England international is charged with attempted rape, assault and controlling and coercive behaviour and had initially been remanded in custody on Monday.

Following the hearing, a spokesman for the court said bail had been granted, with conditions not to contact witnesses, including the complainant, and to reside at an address on Bow Green Road in Bowdon. Greenwood did not appear for the short hearing.

The 21-year-old forward’s case has been adjourned to November 21, when a pre-trial preparation hearing will take place at Manchester’s Minshull Street Crown Court.

Greenwood faces three charges, all relating to the same alleged victim:

Attempting to rape a woman on October 22, 2021.

Engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour between November 1, 2018 and October 15, 2022.

Assaulting a person, thereby occasioning them actual bodily harm between December 12 and 31, 2021.

The charges were brought against Greenwood on Saturday “after Specialist rape prosecutors from CPS North West’s complex casework unit authorised the charges following a review of a file of evidence received from Greater Manchester Police,” said Janet Potter, the deputy chief crown prosecutor for CPS North West, on Saturday.

Greenwood was re-arrested on Saturday following an allegation that he breached his bail conditions by contacting the alleged victim. He spent Saturday and Sunday night behind bars, before a court appearance at Manchester Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

Greenwood only spoke in court to give his name, address and date of birth, before being remanded in custody. He had been due to spend the next month at one of the country’s most notorious prisons, HMP Manchester, formerly known as Strangeways, before being granted bail Wednesday morning.

Greenwood remains suspended by United “pending the outcome of the judicial process.” The club have previously said he is being paid his salary, in the range of £75,000-a-week, in full during the suspension. His last appearance came in a Premier League win against West Ham United on January 22.
