15 drown in Sokoto during Eid-el-Maulud
celebration

AT least, 15 villagers drowned while 10 were rescued when their boat capsised on the waterway along Shagari Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

  Residents said the victims met their death on Tuesday evening on their way to a neigbouring village to attend an activity in commemoration of Prophet Muhammad’s birthday also known as eid-el-Maulud.

  Chairman of Shagari Local Government Area, Aliyu Abubakar Dantani, confirmed the incident.

  According to him, the victims came from different villages.

  “They were 25 onboard when the boat capsised but 10 of them were rescued alive. They came from four different villages, converged on one of the villages and from there they entered the canoe. They were on their way to another village for the annual Maulud festival but the boat capsised before they reached their destination. 15 persons drowned but their bodies were later recovered and buried according to the Islamic rites,” Dantani said.
