Nigeria Association of Women Journalists(NAWOJ),Ebonyi State Chapter, have called on parents to join hands to fight against child abuse in the society.
The association disclosed this during a sensitisation visit to Emmanuel Anglican Church Primary School, Azuiyiokwuand Living Oasis International School.
The sensitisation visit was in commemoration of the 2022 International Day of The Girl Child.
NAWOJ during the visit said the theme for this year’s celebration was ‘Our Time Is Now – Our Rights, Our Future.’
Representing the state chairman of NAWOJ, Comrade NkechinyereOginyi, the vice chairperson of the association, Nnenna Beneath called on parents to protect their children from all forms of abuse.
She noted that child abuse can happen at home, school or anywhere in the society.
Addressing the pupils, Mrs. Cynthia Egwuwith Radio Nigeria Unity Fm,Abakaliki educated the children on their rights and told them to be wary of the evil in society.
“You have a right as a girl, you have a right as a boy. As a child, you have a right to education, you have a right to a good living, and you have a right to say yes or No. You have a right to decision making that is why daddy will always enquire from you about what you want sometimes.
Mrs. Egwu also educated the child on security tips. “Don’t go out alone.After school, make sure you go home in groups.That will make anyone with bad intentions not to be able to do anything to you, and do not collect things from strangers”.
Also, AmarachukwuEgwu-Agha with the Blueprint Newspaper, enlightened the children on gender-based violence(GBV) and encouraged them to speak out when molested.
” Do not allow anybody to intimidate you.Whenever an uncle or neighbor attempts to touch you, always say no and tell your parent.
“It’s your right to say no to violence.It’s your right to be safe .Tell your parents that the government said that no girl child should be violated
