Nigeria leads in global sickle cell cases – WHO

ABOUT 24 per cent of Nigeria’s total population has sickle cell.
A study published by a team of World Health Organisation (WHO) researchers gave the figure.
The study also found that the disease is prevalent in Africa.
According to the study which was published yesterday in the latest edition of The Africa Report, the figure means that Nigeria is leading the global sickle cell case toll.
Explaining that this statistic makes sickle cell the most prevailing genetically-acquired disease in the country and also places the nation as the global epicenter, the researchers recommended further research into sickle cell and a legal framework passed by Nigerian lawmakers to control and manage.
