A fracas that broke out in a motor park, popularly called ‘Under Bridge’ in the Ojo area of Lagos metropolis, before escalating into a heavy fight that quickly spread to other nearby garages left six persons dead, yesterday.
Many others sustained various degrees of injuries as groups engaged one another in the free-for-all fights, with commuters and passers-by scampering for safety in different directions to avoid being up in the crossfire.
While two persons died instantly in ‘Under Bridge’ with one other persons confirmed dead on arrival in a hospital where he was rushed, three more persons died in reprisal fights taking place in neighbouring Iyana-Iba Motor Parks along Lagos-Badagry Expressway.
Vehicles and other properties were also destroyed.
Eyewitnesses said the fights were taking place between rival factions of members of Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) who, they said, were embroiled in a battle for control in ‘Under Bridge.’
According to them, dangerous weapons such as iron cudgels, guns and machetes were freely used by both sides to gain upper hand.
A commercial bus operator identified the warring factions as Goroso and students camps.
“Goroso and students are members of Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN). The crisis is over who controls the new park created in Under Bridge, Iyana-Iba, Ojo. Many people were injured and three persons killed before similar fight spread to nearby parks in sympathy by loyalists,” he said.
Efforts to get police confirmation of the fights proved abortive.
