AMAWBIA community in Awka South LGA at the weekend, celebrated this year’s New Yam Festival amid pomp.
Coming on the heels of the last Ofala Festival of the traditional ruler of the town, Igwe Chinyelu Nworah-Molokwu, the 2022 Yam Festival kick-started at the palace of the regent, Ozo Nnaemeka Maduka with the cutting of the new yam for ndị Amawbia to commence the eating of the new yam.
Speaking while performing the rites of the new yam, the regent, Ozo Maduka urged the community to continue to embrace peace, love and tolerance for one another and residents of the town.
He reminded them that peace remains the springboard for meaningful development, urging the people to lend their weight to the present administration in the state by supporting its lofty policies and programmes.
President general of the town, Godwin Aronu, while speaking on the event, is an annual ritual which signals the eating of new yam in the community.
He commended the regent for kick-starting the event, urging ndị Amawbia to remain development conscious as his leadership is focused in bringing about the desired peace and development of the town.
After the palace ceremony, the regent, Ozo Maduka was ushered into the Amawbia central arena (Eziokpaligwe Square) by Ndi Nze na Ozo, and the president general where he formally declared the ceremony open.
At the arena, villages, age grades and eminent personalities were on hand to celebrate the yam festival.
Among personalities that attended the event was Senator Uche Ekwunife, who pledged to always identify with the community in the area of infrastructural development, assuring of effective representation at the National Assembly.
The highlight of the event was the dance performance by Ijele Amawbia Dance Group and Umukabia Women Dance Group.
