Cosmetics abuse leads to skin cancer, organ damage – NAFDAC

NATIONAL Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has warned those abusing bleaching agents to desist or risk skin cancer, organ damage that may lead to death.

Director General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, gave the warning during a brainstorming session in the two-day retreat by the agency’s top managementcCommittee in Lagos, over the weekend.

Cautioning against unauthorised use of cosmetics and dangerous chemicals for skin bleaching, Adeyeye warned that though beauty may be achieved, the practice exposes users to skin cancer.

Adeyeye also expressed shock in the proliferation of beauticians engaged in formulation of unauthorized chemicals with the intention of applying them on their unsuspecting clients, warning that majority of Spa outlets in the nation are culpable of this unhealthy practice of mixing chemicals and natural products like pawpaw, carrot and others to make creams.
