Tax evasion: Anambra seals banks, hotels, others

NO FEWER than twelve hotels, banks and companies have been sealed by the Anambra State Internal Generated Revenue Services (AIRS) over non compliance with tax payment following a court order.
Among the facilities sealed were, Awka Microfinance Bank, AC Peterson Electronics Showroom, Quintana Suites, ANIDS Transport Company, Obalende and Kasorina Hotels all in Awka, while AIICO Insurance American International, and PZ Cussons Nigerian PLC all in Onitsha were also sealed.
It was gathered that levies were mainly those of business premises, sanitation and sundry government taxes.
According to the Head of Department, Compliance, Monitoring and Enforcement of the AIRS, Mrs. Eberechukwu Ezekigbo, the enforcement followed refusal or failure of the companies to appear in court after being served with court summons before the seal off order.
According to her, the exercise was necessary in order to boost the state’s revenue, and ensure that every dime owned to the state government is paid.
In his remarks, Anambra State Internal Revenue Service’s Desk Officer in charge of Anambra State Waste Management Authorit (ASWAMA), Mr. James-Morgan Ezeodili urged ndi Anambra to be tax compliant to enable government deliver developmental projects.
