Urukwu marks New Yam Festival

IT WAS an event well celebrated when sons and daughters of Urukwu community, in Idemili North Local Government Area gathered to mark 2022 New Yam Festival

  The event, which took place at Urukwu Civic Center  attracted clerics, traditionalist, top government officials, business moguls within and outside the community.

  The cultural ceremony commenced with traditional Uhie music ushering the king, Igwe Emeka Onuara and his cabinet into the celebration arena with multiple gun salutes, followed by opening prayers .

  Earlier in his remarks, Igwe Onuara (Eze Oranylu of Urukwu) explained that the occasion is an annual event through which they appreciate God for a fruitful and bountiful farming seasons

  He also  described farming as a very important part of the life of ndi Igbo which if one engages in, will enjoy food security.

  Igwe Onuora further stated that The New Yam Festival which is an avenue to appreciate providence for bountiful harvest also serves as a way ndi Igbo have leisure to deal with stress accumulated over the farming season.

  Interacting with newsmen, the president-general of the community, Architect Shedrack  Onwuasoanya, said that agriculture is one of the things the community is known for, describing yam as king of crops, urging  the people to be focused and shun all social vices.

  He maintained that New Yam Festival is also an avenue many broken communities reunite and achieve a common goal for the betterment of their community.

  Chief Mbanugo Isaac from Amaeze Urukwu in his remark, thanked God for giving them opportunity to witness this year’s annual New Yam Festival in a grand style, praying that the subsequent ones will be greater.

  Mbanugo noted that Urukwu is one of the greatest communities to  be reckoned with in Anambra State.
