Tension in Oyo communities as streams suddenly change colour

Govt calls for calm, caution

RESIDENTS of five communities in Akinyele Local Government Area of Oyo State are gripped with fear after waking up to see streams connecting their towns in strange colour.

The affected communities are Ijaye, Ido, Olowo-Igbo, Iseyin and Ibarapa.

According to natives, their fear stems from the fact that nothing was wrong with the streams from which people fetched water, washed clothes and even swam the previous day.

A man who gave his name as Ibidapo said he even stayed in the stream that crosses his community, Ido, well into the night only to come and see it in totally strange colour when he rushed to see things for himself after hearing news of the occurrence.

Although nobody has been able to confirm what may have caused the sudden change of colour of the streams, tongues have started wagging in the five towns with some attributing the occurrence to the gods while many feared it could be man-made.

Confirming the occurrence, yesterday, Ogun State Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Abiodun Oni urged residents of the communities not to panic.

Oni also warned them not to  drink or use water fetched from the streams for any purpose until government gets to the root of the matter.

According to the commissioner, the streams took up the new colour following contamination by chemical substances that emptied into a drainage channel that emptied into the waters when a truck conveying the commodity was involved in an accident in Iroko community from where the chemicals found their way into the primary stream that links other streams in the area.
