2023: Anti-Ayu protest quakes Abuja

…Ayu will not go – PDP
…INEC clears air on Tinubu, Atiku, Obi

PROTESTERS marching for resignation of National Chairman of People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Iyorchia Ayu nearly brought Abuja to a halt yesterday afternoon.

Chanting anti-Ayu slogans, calling for the embattled chairman’s ouster, the protesters headed for the party’s national secretariat in Wuse.

Free flow of traffic was obstructed as motorists parked by wayside while the protesters marched on.

Explaining that they were acting under the aegis of Concerned Deltans for Good Governance, the protesters said they were in Abuja to register their displeasure over Ayu’s refusal to obey an order of Federal High Court which nullified one Sheriff Oborevwori as PDP’s standard bearer in next year’s governorship election in Delta State.

But the protest is coming amid insistence by Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike’s camp that Ayu should go to atone for rigging the main opposition party’s presidential primary in favour of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

In a related development, PDP’s Board of Trustees (BoT) has said that National Chairman of the party, Iyorchia Ayu, will not step down.

Briefing journalists after their meeting in Abuja, yesterday, Chairman of PDP’s Board of Trustees, Walid Jibrin, said the decision was arrived at after detailed assessment of most issues in the lingering crisis in the party following the faceoff between Atiku and Wike.

In another development, Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has said the commission would be neutral in the 2023 general elections, as it has no preferred candidate or political party.

Yakubu gave the promise in Abuja while speaking during the 4th Abubakar Momoh Memorial Lecture under the theme: Electoral Act 2022: Imperatives for Political Parties and the 2023 General Elections, yesterday.

Explaining that neither All Progressives Congress (APC) flagbearer, Bola Tinubu nor PDP’s Atiku Abubakar, as well as their counterpart in Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi was preferred by INEC, Yakubu said that the electoral umpire would, once again, provide level playing ground for candidates of all the political parties.
