…Traders slump in agony

TRAGEDY struck in Afikpo town of Ebonyi State when a section of the popular Eke market located in the heart of the town was razed down by a midnight inferno.

Though no life was lost, eyewitnesses said goods worth millions, including shops, were destroyed by the mysterious fire outbreak.

While some traders who arrived the scene watched their wares going up in flames, others made frantic efforts to salvage their goods without success because of the intensity of the fire.

They blamed Ebonyi State Fire Service Station in Afikpo for allegedly failing to mobilise to put out the inferno in time. They also accuse officials of the agency for coming with mal functioning and obsolete equipment.

Some of the traders who could not bear their loss were seen being evacuated in comma while others wailed to the high heavens lamenting their misfortune.

Chairman of Afikpo Market Traders Association (AMATA), Mr. Johnson Inya Oka called on the state government to come to their rescue, because many of their members lost everything to the inferno.

Speaking while commiserating with those whose wares were destroyed, Chairman of Afikpo North Local Government Area, Oby Oko Enyim, said he called at the scene around 6:35am yesterday in demonstration of his concern for the traders.
