Unacceptable killing of Okoye, Chiegboka and killers’ more disheartening communication

PENULTIMATE Saturday , the legislator, representing Aguata 2  Constituency in Anambra State House of Assembly  and Chairman, House  Committee on Information,  Okey Okoye, popularly known as ‘Okey is Okay’, was  kidnapped along with his aide, Mr Cyril Chiegboka, within his constituency.

FRANTIC efforts were  made to rescue them,  but last weekend, the bodies and severed heads of the duo were found in various parts of the state. While Dr Okey’s head  was found at Chisco Park, Amichi, in Nnewi South Council Area, in a carton with an unclear message scribbled in a yellow poster sprinkled with blood, signed by unknown gunmen,  purporting that they are warning politicians to get soldiers out of all Biafraland within 48 hours or face their wrath, his headless body was later found near Alor Junction  on Nnobi-Alor-Nkpor Road.

CHIEGBOKA’S similarly decapitated body was found elsewhere in the state.

ISSUES  every right thinking individual should ponder regarding the gruesome killing of the legislator and his aide and the purported  warning to politicians are:  Does  being a politician make one not a Biafran?  Is the letter trying to indicate that the men who killed the duo are same as the ones fighting for the emancipation of Biafra? Is The house (Biafra) fighting against itself? What is the gain of killing the lawmaker and aide on  the alibi that politicians should ensure the removal of soldiers from Biafraland when even the most  uninformed knows that only the Head of State and Commander – in – Chief of the Armed forces can order for the removal of the soldiers? Are they trying to instill fear or make people believe they are everywhere by kidnapping the lawmaker at Umuona, and dropping his severed head at Amichi, while  dumping  his headless body at Nnobi?

WHATEVER may be the case, the action is totally condemnable, gory and ignoble and National Light  abhors it and subscribes to Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s  call for the manhunt  of the perpetrators.

THE governor, while reacting to the killings on his facebook wall wrote:

“Hon. Okechukwu Okoye (Okey dị okay) and Cyril Chiegboka were murdered in the most gruesome manner. No human being should ever have to experience death in that way. For no just reason, rampaging criminals have elected to desecrate our land with the blood of the innocent.

“THIS is a test of our resolve, and we are more emboldened than cowed that this criminality MUST be stamped out of our land. Ụmụnnem ndị Anambra, this is not who we are. The party is over, and every community must brace up to join forces with government in this war to reclaim our homeland.

“OKEY and Cyril will NEVER die in vain. May God console their young families, the people of Isuofia and ndị Anambra. May their souls and all others who have lost their lives in the hands of these criminals continue to rest in peace.

“WE HAVE placed a ten million Naira (10,000,000) bounty for anyone with useful information. This war is one that Anambra must win!”

WHILE urging everyone to encourage and support the government in bringing back sanity in the state and the entire Igboland, National Light believes that turning the originally  most peaceful and hospitable  zone in Nigeria  into an epicenter of violence, banditry, kidnapping, arson and other criminal activities is  very unusual with the pristine Igbo culture and  societal norms for whatever reason adduced  can neither do us any good nor lead us anywhere.

INASMUCH as it is clear that the situation demands more strategic  mental and technical approaches, it is time to save what remains of Igbo values and dignity. We must realise that it is only when we are together that we will win the campaign against insecurity. The  fight is not for the government and security agencies alone.  Everyone must act  now as we never can tell who will be the next victim.
