Scores feared dead in Rivers cargo boat fire
MANY persons are feared to have died when a cargo boat caught fire in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, today.
The fire that started around 10am is still raging at the time of filing this report.
Eyewitnesses said the double deck cargo boat usually conveys over 50 persons and goods.
The boat, popularly known as Market Boat, was conveying traders to an unknown destination when it caught fire at Bonny-Bille-Nembe Jetty at Port Harcourt township area.
Although the cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained but onlookers suspected that a careless smoker may have thrown unspent cigarette into the boat, eyewitnesses said a woman and three of her children on board were feared dead.
Narrating that one of the rescued occupants of the boat was badly burnt, the eyewitness said today’s disaster is the fifth fire incident in Rivers State since the weekend.
