UBEC ranks Anambra, Ogun, Lagos basic education models best in Nigeria
…Slams Imo, Edo, Ebonyi, others
UNIVERSAL Basic Education Commission (UBEC) has ranked the basic education models of Anambra, Ogun, Lagos States as best in the federation.
A document obtained from UBEC Headquarters, Abuja, yesterday, said that apart from paying 50 per cent counterpart fund of N29 billion basic education development goal initiatives of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the three leading states also came top in five main benchmarks: result, sustainable policy, infrastructure, qualified manpower and information communication technology (ICT).
The document which was adopted at the just concluded 65th National Council on Education meeting in Jalingo, Taraba State, also commended Anambra and the other two states for their strategic investments in basic education despite the hard times imposed on global economy by the pandemic.
But UBEC also slammed Imo, Edo and Ebonyi States for not according basic education its rightful position in their priorities, particularly by failing to pay their 50 per cent counterpart fund.
According to the document, this explains why despite parlous state of education in some states, over N130 million in UBEC custody is still unutilised.
The document further disclosed that an award ceremony is also lined up in Abuja for the three leading states.
