Journalists urged to uphold media ethics as WABMA induct new candidates

MEDIA practitioners have been charged to engage in effective and meaningful journalism practice that will add value to society.

 The Director General of the West Africa Broadcast and Media Academy (WABMA), Kevin Ejiofor gave the advice during the inauguration of new students for 3rd Quarter, 2021 Long Courses. The new students were introduced to their course curriculum, structure of classes, faculty, rules and regulations and the facilities in the Enugu Campus of  institution.

 Mr. Ejiofor, who is also a former Director General of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, (FRCN) advised the incumbent students to take full advantage of the WABMA opportunity to become professionals in their fields of interest, adding that professionals are people who are equipped with the relevant skills and knowledge and who practice with the necessary ethics in discharging their duties.

 The institute, which operates both in-campus and online platforms for students, offers short and long courses on media and language studies, including presentation, production, journalism, information communication technology, digital and strategic marketing, broadcast engineering, basic French for beginners and Chinese for beginners, holds orientation sessions quarterly for new candidates.

 The event had in attendance the Registrar of the institution and former DG of Imo Broadcasting Service (IBS), Mr. Richard Asiegbu Snr, WABMA Executive Director and former MD of Enugu State Broadcasting Service (ESBS), Mr Jika Attoh, former ZD Radio Nigeria (FRCN) South East, Pastor Ema Ekpo, Assistant Registrar of WABMA, Miss Chidiebere Njoku, and award-winning journalist and WABMA volunteer instructor, Ekene Odigwe, among others. Many students, guests and instructors, such as Presentation guru, Riume Efetie, joined the orientation event online due to the live streaming of the ceremony.

 One of the students, Momoh Ayuba Danjuma, while expressing zeal in developing professional skills at the academy, said, “I see WABMA as a place where you have great opportunities in media in its entirety. The facilitators there are topnotch and have acquired a lot in their chosen career. They are excellent and WABMA is a place where you can excel in personal development and a finishing school for those who want to be professionals in media practice. It is a center for productive communication. I’m happy to be on this journey to improve my skills”.
