Court remands 19-year old for impregnating girl, 13

A MAGISTRATE Court, sitting in Port Harcourt, River State, has remanded a 19- year-old man, Sunday Samuel, for allegedly impregnating a 13-year- old girl in Rumuigbo community, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

  Samuel was remanded after the minor told the court that he was her boyfriend, adding that she was four months pregnant for him.

  The defendant was arraigned on Monday, by the human rights desk of the Rivers State Police Command on one count of having carnal knowledge of an underage girl.

  The charge read, “That you, Sunday Samuel, on February 14, 2021, on Ohakwe Street, Rumuigbo, in the Port Harcourt Magisterial District, did have unlawful carnal knowledge of one (name withheld) an underage girl of 13 years, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 218 of the Criminal Code of Cap. 37 Vol.11 Laws of Rivers State 1999.”He pleaded not guilty to the charge.

 The Chief Magistrate, Gomba Osaro, ordered that Samuel be remanded in the Port Harcourt Custodial Centre.

  The case was adjourned till August 16, 2021, for consideration of his bail application
