The man, Obi Cubana

OBI Iyiegbu, popularly known as Obi Cubana is a businessman, show producer, philanthropist, show killer, and Chief Executive Officer of the Cubana Group. His luxurious hospitality brand is considered one of the most palatial ecstatic hospitality brands in Nigeria.

  Obi Cubana refers to himself as God’s Favorite Son. His name come to mind when you talk of the richest entertainment business moguls in Nigerian hospitality and entertainment industry. Working as an entertainer, Obi Cubana has been making impressive waves in the Nigerian entertainment industry. His affluence and influence dominate the social circle, but gained wider currency with the burial of his mother.

  The astute businessman has over the years, launched many Cubana brands across the country and has plans of spreading his tentacles across shores of the country.

  Obi Cubana had a humble beginning before his emergence as one of the most affluent businessmen in Nigeria. He was born on  April 12, 1975, to Sir Alex Nnaemka Iyiegbu and his mother, Ezinne Uche Iyiegbu of Aboji Village in Oba, a town in Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State. Cubana has four siblings; two elder brothers named Chu, and Ike. His elder sister is Adeaze Moore.

  The journey to fame and fortune for Obi Cubana started from Central Primary School where he obtained his First School Leaving Certificate before proceding to Dennis Memorial Grammar School (DMGS), Onitsha where he obtained his West Africa Secondary School Certificate. In 1998, he graduated with a degree in political science from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

  He began his business in the hospitality and entertainment industry in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja. Given his understanding of the need to get people entertained daily he opened the first branch named Opium in the Imo State capital, Owerri, before spreading across other states in Nigeria, including Lagos, Enugu and Abuja, where his conglomerate currently has restaurants, bars and nightclubs.

  In 2006, he started his first night club, Ibiza Club in Abuja, to satisfy fun seekers and nightlife lovers. Following the remarkable progress he made from the Ibiza Club, he established the Cubana Group, a hospitality club that provides all-around entertainment satisfaction in 2009. According to Cubana, entertainment is life and a way of relieving people from day-to-day stress.

  The father-of-three is reportedly worth about $96 million, while his investments and conglomerates scattered across the world are estimated at $2b. This is based on his income, properties, and asset.

  His businesses and establishments include, Rolex Hotels – Lagos, Cubana Leisure Outfits, Pablo Cubana – Lagos, Crave Cubana – Abuja, Grand Cubana Hotels – Abuja, Opium Cubana – Owerri, Cubana Night Clubs – Lagos, Gustavo Cubana- Enugu, among others.

  He works with the likes of Paschal Okechukwu, known as Chief Priest Cubana, who is the General Manager of Cubana, Owerri and others to aid the further growth of the group.  He is currently working on Cubana Dubai and Cubana Real Estate.

  Obi Cubana has received numerous awards and accolades for his philanthropy and humanitarian services.

  In 2016, he won the Young Entrepreneur of the Year and in 2017, he won the Northern Nigeria Peace Summit Award. He was a recipient of The Right Ville School Special Leadership Award in 2017. For his inspiring lifestyle, he won the Ghana-Nigeria Achievers Award 2017 as Inspiring Personality Award, 2017.

  He bagged the Northern Nigeria Peace Summit/Award 2017 as Northern Nigeria Peace Builder of the year 2017. The Nigeria Film Corporation honoured him with the Entertainment Icon Award 2017. In 2018, he won the Democracy Heroes Award 2018 as Democracy Entrepreneur of the year.

  Despite his affluence and influence, he acknowledges that he seldom talks or takes to social media.

  “Many non-Oba indigenes will still benefit from me because I am still in the business of making people great.”

  Obi Cubana is married to Ebele Iyiegbu, aka Lush Eby, a lawyer, founder and owner of KIEK Foundation, a non- governmental organisation established with the aim of improving the lives of the less privileged children in our society through quality education, healthcare, nutrition and child’s right governance. Their union is blessed with four kids whom are all boys.
