Ebonyi varsity graduates, inducts 58 medical doctors

EBONYI State University, Abakaliki, has graduated and inducted 58 new medical doctors and  presented awards to best graduating students in the school.

The induction of the 58 new medical professionals, which took place at the permanent site of the university was witnessed by dignitaries, friends and well-wishers who came to felicitate with the graduands.

 In her remarks, the overall best graduating medical student, Miss Uzoigwe Ifechukwu expressed joy over the success recorded while in school, saying that it was only the grace of God that found her worthy. She explained that earlier before she got admission to study medicine and surgery, she wanted to be a Rev. Sister but was later given admission into medical school.

 She appealed to the institution to establish e-library to boost the research capacity of medical students and a functional teaching hospital.

 The provost of the College of Health Sciences, P.C Ibekwe, while presenting his speech, said the graduation of the medical students called for celebration, especially now that the whole world is being challenged by strange ailments, pandemics and unknown gunmen which demands  more medical personnel to combat the menace.

 Prof. Ibekwe stated that 58 brand new medical doctors were graduating and will be inducted to add to the earlier produced 1672 medical doctors to make a total of 1730 qualified medical personnel who are gracefully solving human medical problems around the world.

 Also speaking, the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Emeka Onwe Ogah noted that the Physician Oath-Taking Ceremony is just the beginning of medical practice, saying that any house built on porous foundation is bound to fail, calling on the graduands to give out their best in medical practice.

 Dr. Ogah further pleaded with the vice chancellor, Prof.Chigozie Ogbu to reward the 10 best medical students by allowing them do their housemanship in their hospital and be supervised by consultants in the hospital.

 On his part, the Registrar, Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, T.A Sanusi applauded the efforts of Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi for the overall infrastructural transformation across the state, especially the newly built King David Umahi Medical University, advising the governor to facilitate and equip the hospital first for medical students before other courses and engage more consultants as well as making the environment conducive for students to learn. He  admonished the graduands to exhibit high sense of discipline and commitment in discharging their duties as doctors.

 Responding, Governor David Umahi,  who was represented by his deputy, Dr.Eric Kelechi Igwe stated that the graduands have a special place in the history of Nigeria, while emphasising the importance of their code of conduct as medical doctors; calling on the institution to make it form part of their school curriculum to avoid truancy and professional misconduct.

 The gov. charged the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria to ensure that all graduating students are accommodated to do their housemanship within the hospital to avoid exposing them to danger and frustration while searching for hospitals outside.
