TEN members of a family in Biogberu village in Gwanara, Kwara State, have died after consuming a local herbal drink.
Spokesman of Kwara State Police Command, Okasanmi Ajayi disclosed the deaths in a statement he signed and made available to newsmen, yesterday.
According to him, one Worugura Junlin gave the local herbal mixture to a woman, who was having a foot infection as a cure for her ailment.
“On 22 June, 2021, at about 0700hrs, one Ibrahim Bonnie (22) of Fulani Camp Biogberu, via Gwanara, reported at the police station that one Okosi Musa (35) and one Worugura Junlin, an adult, came to his mother by name Pennia Bonni (40) of same Fulani Camp. She was told to ensure that all her family members take out of the mixture to prevent the spread of the disease to other family members. After taking the local herbal mixture, the family members started dying one after the other, about 10 of them, including the infected legged mother, died,” the police spokesman said.
Continuing, Ajayi said that Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Lawal Bagega, has ordered investigation into the incident while two suspects are already being held in connection with the deaths.
However, he advised members of the public to seek treatment in recognised medical homes whenever they fall sick.
In another development, a commercial motorcyclist and his two passengers were yesterday morning crushed to death by a truck loaded with soft drinks at Total Garden area of Ibadan, Oyo State.
An eyewitness, who identified himself as Joel Idowu, said that the fully-loaded truck killed the victims in front of the Bovas Filling Station while the cyclist was trying to overtake the truck.
According to Idowu, the victims’ corpses were deposited in (UCH), Ibadan morgue.
Sector Commander of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Oyo State, Uche Chukwurah, confirmed the incident in a telephone interview.
According to Chukwurah, five people were involved in the accident with three confirmed dead, and two others injured.
Also, a 24-year-old man identified as Christian Edem Eyo was arrested for allegedly killing his aunty in Calabar, yesterday morning in their compound along Inyang Street in Calabar South Local Government Area.
Eyewitnesses said after killing the woman identified as Uduak Effiong, Eyo buried her body in a shallow grave in front of the compound, before he took the victim’s head and dumped it in a pit inside his room.
Deputy Police Public Relations Officer of Cross River Police Command, Igiri Ewa, confirmed the incident, saying the suspect is already in police net.
