In Anambra, group organises voter enlightenment for rural women

WOMEN have been advised to actively participate in electoral process in Nigeria. 

The Chairperson of  Nigeria League of Women Voters, Anambra State Chapter, Ego Cordelia Uzoezie gave the advice in a one- day voters education organised for rural women on Tuesday.

 The event, which held at AmaokpalIa in Orumba North Local Government Area was grand as selected women from Aguata, Orumba North and Orumba South Local Government Areas came to receive the training.

 She said, “we are here to teach rural women  how to vote to avoid waste. Our aim is to enlighten them on the need to register and vote wisely. It is a civic responsibility, so we want to encourage them to do what they are supposed to do.”

  Dr. Uzoezie further stated that the league, which is a national and international organisation don’t support any party. “We are after women. We support wise women to work for the progress of the community”, she said.

 She explained that the league also succor brilliant children and therefore called for sponsorship in order to progress.

 The Transition Chairman of Orumba North Local Government Area, Ify Obinabo encouraged women to use their voter’s card wisely and put what they learnt from the training in practice.    

 Obinabo, who was represented by her Special Assistant, Chinedu Uka said; “If women can follow this instructions today, our mind set concerning election will change, because people don’t come out for election because of the situation in the country. Women these days are champions, if women should organise themselves, they will form majority of voters. Use your voter’s card wisely. We encourage you to come out and vote.”

  On her part, Lady Eucharia Ijeoma Anekwe, Executive Director,, Gender Perspective and Social Development Centre had this to say: “We are trying to reach every target, children, youths and women. I am happy touching people in the grassroots for participation in 2021 election”. She also urged the women to be careful in casting their vote.

    The program officer/youth leader, Dr Bernadette Ndidiamaka Ezeokoye encouraged girls to sit up. She said “Now we understand that what a man can do, a woman can also do it. Girls should sit up, read books, go out and know what is obtainable to get confidence and knowledge”

   A participant, Mrs Ozoike Chinenye from Ufuma, in Orumba North said: ”I learnt a lot of things I don’t know before. Today, I understand that women can also do what men do”

 Highlights of the event included voter/civic education, election and electoral processes, questions and answer sessions.
