Sen Ogba expresses confidence on Team Nigeria, Super Eagles
CHAIRMAN, Senate Committee on Sports and Youth Development, Obinna Ogba has expressed optimism that Team Nigeria and the Super Eagles will perform impressively at the forthcoming Olympic Games and African Cup of Nations slated for Japan and Cameroon respectively.
Senator Ogba who spoke to our correspondent during an interview in Enugu said his optimism was based on the kind of preparations the Nigerian representatives are making for the global and continental sporting events.
He explained that unlike in the past Games, Team Nigeria had embarked on early preparations thereby jettisoning the fire brigade measures Nigerian teams to international events were known for. He further explained that the handlers of the team took a wise and positive decision by concentrating on few events the country has comparative advantage.
“If you observe what the Federal Ministry of Sports and the Nigeria Olympic Commission are doing in preparing the team for the Games, you will agree with me that they are laying good foundation for success. The Team is having good preparations both in the country and abroad with the best facilities one can think of. Besides, the fact that they chose only events we have prospect of winning medals shows that they are going to Japan for serious business. They have just sent the message that the time of going to international sporting events for jamboree was over. With God on our side, the Team will perform better this time”.
The Senator from Ebonyi State who used the opportunity to speak on the chances of the Super Eagles winning the African Cup of Nations cup for the fourth time in Cameroon said, “Super Eagles have everything it takes to win the trophy in Cameroon.
Let’s not make the mistake of rating them based on the friendly match with the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon. The Super Eagles as presently constituted have players who are doing extremely well in their respective clubs abroad capable of rising up to the occasion and win the cup for us”.
He expressed confidence on the the ability of the Gernot Rohr led technical crew to evolve a sound technical discipline and approach that will make victory possible for Nigeria.
