Anambra Health Commissioner extols UNIZIK researchers for innovation

ANAMBRA State Commissioner for Health, Vincent Okpala,  has extolled the Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) team of researchers on Social Innovation In Health (SIHI), whose finding will provide solutions to the health sector in the state. 

  Dr Okpala said that their innovation would produce results and proffer solutions to problems in the health sector via use of technology. 

  The commissioner made the commendation during an official launch of a hub for top innovations at the Garba Square, UNIZIK, Awka. 

  “The top innovators are, Parkers Mobile Centre, Drug-Medics.com; Ukana West II Community-based health Insurance. 

  “The SIHI is an informal network of individuals and institutions sharing a common goal to advance social innovations.  

  He expressed delight at the work done while acknowledging their timeliness in organising and producing the results. 

  “It’s truly encouraging to see academics work within a timeline. I initially thought it will take longer than expected but you have given us results that has addressed the problem it is meant to achieve.”

  Dr Okpala described the innovation as borderless, noting that the state valued innovations, urging the group to ensure that its innovations were taken beyond Nigeria. 

  According to him, learning should not be only based on theories, advising students to take advantage of new technology to assist in solving problems in the society. 

  “I urge you to take this to the next level; this is borderless and we are happy you’ve started this in Anambra. 

  “Some of the innovations seen in the tech world started like this and look at the advanced countries; that is what they do,” he said. 

  He enjoined the students to take advantage of the e learning; you should not only be based on theory; start working on problems while in school and soon you’ll become employers of labour.”

  The Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Charles Esimone assured the group of his full support and urged them not to relent in their efforts at improving the healthcare service delivery through technology. 

  The VC commended them for their tireless efforts, informing them that the institution was proud of their initiative and commitment. 

  Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Prof. Joseph Ikechebelu represented the VC at the event.   

  Members of the team are, Prof. Obioma Nwaorgu, Prof. Stella Okunna, Prof. Chinyelu Ekwunife, Dr Oge Aribodor, Dr Chinyere Onubogu, Dr Obinna Ekwunife, Mr Kingsley Anigbogu and Mr Nonso Ndibe from the state Ministry of Health. 

  Mrs Edith Egbuonu, State Director Pharmaceutical Services accompanied the commissioner to the event.
