SERENITY, nature and rich aquatic setting mark the Oromo-Etiti community in Anam, Anambra West Local Government Area of Anambra State. The town, set on the bank of Omambala River was agog in celebration  on Monday, as their monarch, H.R.M. Eze Nwaozekwe Okeke marked his 45th year on the royal throne.

The 91-year old monarch made his 2021 Ovala Festival count, specifically by  conferring  titles to distinguished members of the society selected across different walks of life and from various parts of Anambra State.

In the event’s address of welcome delivered by a prince of the kingdom and Anambra State Coordinator of  National Identity Management Commission (NIMC),  Philip Iwuchukwu Okeke on behalf of the monarch, the royal father was described as an astute leader, that places premium on diligence and industry in leading  his subjects, established   honesty as the secret of his reigning for 45 years and still counting.

“Igwe Nwaozekwe was colourfully presented to his constituency, the people of Oromo-Etiti, Anam and finally coronated on October 7, 1979 with pomp and pageantry … It is worthy of mention that the ancestral lineage has been established on truth, wisdom, understanding, diligence and above all, affluence that has earned the longevity,” Prince Iwuchukwu noted.

According to the statement, the leadership of Nwaozekwe set the pace for accelerated archetectural modernity in Anambra West, as he holds the record of building the first three-storey building in the entire Anambra West and as well becoming the first government recognised traditional ruler in the area.

Conferring titles to 16 selected personalities, the royal father made it clear that the choice of the awardees was based on their integrity, good track records and meritorious service to humanity in their different fields of endeavour. He charged the awardees to continue leading exemplary life, touching humanity positively with their service.

In his remark, one of the beneficiaries of the honour, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, of Anambra Newspapers Printing Corporation, (ANPC), publishers of National Light, Ka O di Taa, SportsLightXtra newspapers,  Chuka Nnabuife, who was bestowed the title, Iruoma Anam  extolled the sage and remarked the vibrancy of the monarch.

“I am happy that today, I received the title and i am also very committed to the responsibilities that it confers  on me. I am using today to recommit myself , pledge my commitment to the community and to all the things they saw in me that made me fit for such a huge honour; but more importantly, to appreciate the honour and  whatever that made his Royal Majesty to confer the title on me. I love, appreciate and express my indebtedness to my friends, associates and my colleagues who found me worthy of taking their time to celebrate with me. I feel honored,” Sir Nnabuife said.

Nnabuife, who led delegations from his town, Ubuluisiuzo, in Ihiala Local Council of Anambra State, staffers of ANPC, relations and friends from various walks of life to receive the title, added thusly:

“I am humbled to be so honored. Oroma Etiti now becomes one of the communities close to my heart. Anam and the entire kingdom becomes my home  that I hold dearly as my own. I am now part of them so this  touches me, redefines my commitment and my personality. I can’t go without remembering the Anam kingdom. I can’t go without remembering Oroma Etiti and I think I will benefit from this and they also benefit from me. They  have found a brother,  found a son,  found a chief and  found one of their keen promoters. That is what I tell the Anam people and I tell my people in Ubuluisiuzo and my people in Ihiala that we have found another town and another kingdom that is our kin; that will work with us and we will never fail in any of these.

His words:  Igwe Okeke is now my Igwe, my father and my mentor.”

In the same vein,  Anambra State Commissioner for Trade and Commerce, Sir Uche Charles Okafor expressed his gratitude to the king for giving him such an honour.  “I accept it with a heart full of gratitude. The essence of recognition or title giving is for the people to share both in their joys and pains. Having been installed today as high chiefs, we will make sure that good things will continue to happen in Oroma Etiti.  We will support them in any way we can individually and politically”.

In his contribution, Igwe Nwaozekwe Okeke’s son, Prince Rapuluchukwu Nwaozekwe described the event as double blessings as his father turned 91 years of age and 45 years on the throne.

“In the tradition of Igbo land, Ovala Festival is a celebration of prosperity and wealth by the royal family. Today’s own is very much significant as it portrays not just Ovala but the Igwe’s  45 years on the throne. This is a remarkable feat and we give God all the glory for that. Igwe is a man of the people, man of peace. He is very hard working. We have learnt to take life easy for whatever that is supposed to be yours is definitely yours. This is a period when youths are desperate’ everybody wants to make it by force.  We have seen how humble he is. Oroma Etiti has witnessed tremendous growth and development under his stewardship. We are very happy and appreciate his good legacies.”

For another awardee and indigene of Anam, Anthony Onyekwe Onuora,  the event is a wakeup call for people to imbibe virtues. “ I am very glad to be part of this history. I received his blessing and title.  I am forever grateful and wish my king longer life and good health.”
