Anambra State traditional rulers have decried the spate of kidnapping and banditory going on along
Enugwu Agidi- Nawgwu – Ukwulu- Igbariam Road.
The Chairman, Anambra State Traditional Rulers Council, Obi Alfred Achebe, made the feelings of the traditional rulers known when the traditional ruler of Enugwu Agidi in Njikoka Local Government Area, Igwe Michael Okeke Uche, and his Nawgu counterpart in Dunukofia Local Government Area, Igwe George Onwuogu, presented the complaints about the spate of banditry and kidnapping going on along the route to the Traditional Rulers Council Meeting at their chamber in Government House, Awka.
He urged government not to treat the issue with kid gloves as they now cause disorder in the said communities.
Speaking on the issue, the traditional ruler of Enugwu Agidi and that of Nawgu recalled that the kidnappers had earlier kidnapped a lecturer and his wife, a business mogul from the adjoining town as well as some affluent sons of the towns among others, held them captive and demanded ransom from their families, relatives or business associates.
The duo expressed grave concern over the ugly development, hence the need to present the matter to the council for urgent intervention as they now sleep in fear.
Reacting to the issues, the traditional rulers of Ukpor, in Nnewi South Council Area, Igwe Felix Onyimadu, Eze Chuma Emma Onyia of Odekpe, in Ogbaru Local Government, Igwe Benjamin Okeji of Omasi, Eze Augustine Ngoddy of Atani, Igwe Chidubem Iweka of Obosi, in Idemmili North and Igwe Christopher Okpala of Akwaeze, in Anaocha Local Government Area, condemned the ugly development, pointing out the consequences and effects of kidnapping and banditory on victims to include psychological trauma, fear and lack of trust.
The royal fathers appealed to government to deploy Army, and police officers to the areas to save both the residents and those who use the road on daily basis from the claws of the kidnappers who have now seen it as lucrative business with some being sponsored by some unscrupulous elements.
