Anambra sports Commission ready for action – Igwe



CHAIRMAN, Anambra State House of Assembly Committee on Sports, Youth Entrepreneurship and Creative Economy, Chukwunonso Noble Igwe has said  that from all indications, the state sports commission was ready for action.

  Igwe said that the budget interface with the Sports Commission revealed that the commission was ready to revamp sporting activities in the state, judging from the presentations it made.

  The lawmaker, who spoke with our reporter in Awka, said that the Sports Commission made noticeable efforts in 2020 in spite of the hiccups caused by the COVID-19 pandemic which he believes stalemated sporting events in the country, including Anambra State

   He said there were indications that sporting activities would commence in earnest as sports men and women have returned to camp to resume training preparatory to the national sports festival.

  He said the budget of the commission was encompassing as it made provision for the completion of the Awka Township Stadium. Other zonal stadia which will be sited at Nnewi and Idemili-South were also captured in the commission’s budget estimate.

  The lawmaker also noted that formation of state football club has a budget head of about N150 Million. This according to him is aimed at boosting sporting activities in Anambra State.

  He said government wanted to take advantage of the #EndSARS protest to take more youths off the streets through sporting events and other talent hunt programmes of the state Ministry Of Youth Entrepreneurship and Creative Economy.

  Igwe stated that if the funds appropriated in the budget can be accessed, there is no gainsaying the fact that youth empowerment and job creation will not be guaranteed in the state.

  The lawmaker however pointed out that the sporting facilities that were under lock and key across Anambra State was due to the directives from the National COVID-19 Team which mandated that all sporting events should be put on hold.

  Although he said sports centres had reopened for activities like the Dr.Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka, Achebe Stadium, Onitsha, and some others,  he also charged the Sports Commission to reinvigorate sporting activities especially in schools to discover more talents for onward grooming for international sporting events.
