Catholics celebrate in Awka
AS Catholic Church celebrates the solemnity of Christ the King, at St. Theresa Parish Mbaukwu, all the faithful came out en mass to show their joy towards the occasion. The colourful event featured the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, various pious societies in the church, special number by the choir, dance and other side attractions among others.
Speaking at the event, the parish priest of the church, Rev Fr. James Michael Okpalaonwuka noted that this year’s jubilee was worth celebration since coronavirus pandemic did not affect any person in the area.
In his homily, the residence priest, Rev Fr Basil Okonkwo reiterated that despite the coronavirus pandemic, God’s love and grace still keep people alive.
Okonkwo revealed that Christ’s death on the cross distinguishes him from any other earthly king, adding that Christ’s kingship is associated with being a good shepherd who is ready to do anything for his flock.
“Jesus Christ is king of love, mercy and forgiveness which thus makes him different from any other king in the whole universe.”
The cleric also narrated that the celebration of Christ the King was established by Pope Pius 11 in 1925 as an antidote to secularism and confusion among the faithful, thus intended to proclaim in a striking and effective manner Christ’s royalty over individuals, families, society, governments.
He also frowned at the attitude of some Nigerian politicians who hid COVID-19 palliatives to the detriment of the poor masses.
In his remarks, the Parish Vicar, Rev Fr James Adawai, advised the Catholic faithful to always portray good stewardship as Christ followers and to desist from condemning others in their wrong doing. “Everyone will be judged according to his did on the last day”, he added.
