Anambra begins clampdown on illegal toll collectors

ANAMBRA State Government has started clampdown on illegal toll collectors in the state at the markets and on the roads.

A joint task force led by the Commissioner for Transport, Afam Mbanefo and his Trade and Commerce counterpart, Uchenna Okafor, with ATMA, Ocha Brigade operatives and other security agencies raided some flashpoints in Onitsha and Amansea.

Speaking during an interview, Mbanefo noted that the illegal revenue collectors had not only milked commercial drivers dry with its negative effects on Anambra’s economy, but had also started collecting money from passengers, especially those using the services of tri-cycles.

He noted that all these activities had continued to cause traffic jams, reducing the number of traders coming into Anambra, especially Onitsha Main Market, with its negative effects on social life in Anambra.

He then reaffirmed the commitment of Gov. Obiano administration, toward fighting illegal revenue agents on the roads.

The team arrested illegal revenue collectors at Upper Iweka, Niger Bridge Head, Main Market and Amansea area of Awka.
