THE traditional ruler of Ihiala, Oluoha Thomas Obidiegwu has extolled Governor Willie Obiano and Anambra State Commissioner Information and Public Enlightenment, Mr. C Don Adinuba, for making Ihiala New Yam Festival a colourful one.
The traditional ruler, who stated this during the Iwaji ceremony of the community, described them as custodians of culture, adding that the working governor is worthy of emulation.
He maintained that the governor is doing great for the welfare of ndi Anambra in all spheres of life, saying that the governor has really made Anambra State the Light of the Nation.
The monarch also commended Gov. Obiano for his tireless efforts at revolutionising the state, particularly the agricultural sector which he noted has been turned into a huge money spinner under Gov. Obiano.
He further said that the commissioner showed that he is the true son of Ihiala, for the attendance. He urged the commissioner not to relent in his good work in the state as regards information dissemination and public enlightening.
He said that Ihiala would always be law abiding, as well as standing solidly behind the state government.
He later commended everyone who graced the occasion and prayed for better days ahead.
Speaking at the occasion, C Don Adinuba, who represented Gov. Willie Obiano called on Ihiala people, particularly those who feel alienated, to rally round Igwe Obidiegwu, who he said, would continue to pilot the town’s affairs in the path of unity, peace and progress. He noted that Oluoha XVII has been very impressive since his coronation till date.
Speaking on the significance of New Yam Festival in Ihiala, Adinuba said it was the day the kingdom gave glory to God and the ancestors in appreciation of a bumper harvest. The commissioner also used the event to solicit the people’s continued support for the Gov. Willie Obiano-led administration who, he promised, will never relent in his vision to irreversibly transform all sectors of the economy into a global model of development that will inspire his successors.
The event attracted dignitaries which included: Ichie Mike Ejezie, Ichie Val Ntomchukwu, Ichie Collins Agbasiere, Ichie Ody Chukwube, Ifeanyichukwu Ezeaka, Ichie Ike Nwokemodo, C-Don Adinuba, the PG of Ihiala, Chief Okechukwu Chukwu and the Transition Committee Chairman of Ihiala Local Government Council, Jude Obiwulu.
Traditional dances and homages to Igwe Obidiegwu by all the villages in Ihiala added colour to the event. A major highlight of the ceremony was cutting of the first new yam in the town by Igwe Obidiegwu. The event was marked in strict compliance with all COVID-19 protocol.
Ichie Ody Chukwube spoke on importance of the festival to the community. According to him, the New Yam Festival is an old tradition bequeathed to the present generation by their forefathers. “It was handed over to us and we have to sustain it. Had it not been for the COVID-19 pandemic, all sons and daughters of Ihiala town would have been here to participate in the celebration. We believe that our town has to be united and we are using the festival as an instrument of unity”.
Ichie Collins Agbasiere also commended everyone present for the annual event. He noted that the customs and traditions of a people is the pride of the people. “Our tradition will not die under our watchful eyes. We will as well bequeath it to tomorrow’s generation. This is in essence, why we are here”
