ANAMBRA State joined the rest of the world to commemorate the 2020 World Peace Day in Awka.
The theme of the celebration was “Shaping Peace Together”.
The event was organised in conjunction with the South-East Zonal Institution for Peace and Conflict Resolution, Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
It was declared open by Gov Willie Obiano, who was represented by Clerk of Anambra State House of Assembly, Mr Pius Udoh.
Dignitaries like the Chairman, South-East Miyetti Allah, Sarkin Fulani Idris Sekidi, traditional rulers, the Nigerian Police, were present to discuss measures to sustain peace.
Gov Obiano said his administration placed premium on security of lives and property and as a result, the state witnessed an influx of investors, entrepreneurs and various developers.
He added that the government had initiated various mechanisms to contain conflicts in the state and that was the reason that Anambra was declared the safest state in Nigeria.
“In line with the provisions of Nigeria’s Constitution, we have ensured adequate security of life and property; today, Anambra is the most secure state in Nigeria.
“Peace is a situation where there is justice and mechanism for a peaceful resolution of crises.
“Security can be threatened by political situation, cultism, land grabbing and so on; all are sources of threat to security, but Anambra has created mechanism to contain all.”
Convener of the event and South-East Head, Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Lady Amaka Uzodinma enjoined leaders to implement measures that would entrench peace in their communities.
Director-General, IPCR, Dr Bakut Bakut represented by the Head Gender, Peace and Security of the organisation, Mrs Awodu Grace said it was important to promote peaceful co-existence in the country.
“We should promote and strengthen the ideals of peace, among countries and peoples of the world, through observing 24 hours of non-violence and cease fire where violent conflict or war exist.”
