CHIE’MMA Empowerment Foundation (CEF), will on Sunday, hold a seminar to create awareness on sickle cell at St Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, GRA, Awka, Anambra State.
President of foundation Mrs. Chinwe Nnagbo, who made this known when she visited Anambra Newspapers and Printing Corporation (ANPC), publishers of National Light, Ka O Di Taa and Sportlights XTRA newspapers along with her husband, Mr Michael Nnagbo, said the seminar, which will commence by 4pm is to educate the youth on genotype compatibility and register members that are victims of sickle cell in the church, so that they can now be referred to government hospitals where they can have access to free drugs and free food with other medicare.
Mrs Nnagbo also stated that another aim of the seminar is to eradicate the stigma and harassment that victims of sickle cell are exposed to, using her grandmother as an example. “In some communities, sickle cell victims are termed ‘ogbanje’ while others are flogged or suffer other physical abuses, so we want to change people’s orientation on sickle cell.”
CEF Foundation, which started since 2018, aims at creating social change development and integration of underprivileged individuals and groups in Nigeria.
