Goethe Institut, Nigeria has called for applications from African women to participate in the forthcoming Goethe Institut Basic Wikipedia Modular Training 2020, which gives an opportunity for any interested African female who wants to learn how to write, edit and publish articles on Wikipedia.
According to statement from the institut, studies have shown that most of the articles on the Wikipedia are written from Europe and the US, more so that articles written from Africa countries are mainly written by men, leading to the internet project, Basic Wikipedia Modular Training which is targeted at opening up the world of Wikipedia to African Women.
It further disclosed that deadline for the applications is September 19,, 2020 and the training have been slated to be held online in October, which will consist of five sessions that last two hours each from Monday to Friday, while uccessful applicants will receive a confirmation email with the exact time and dates of the training sessions and all necessary information on how to participate.
The statement also announced the institut’s new programme “Decolonise the Internet”which focuses on bridging the unequal representation of voices from the Global South on the internet and aims to increase awareness on how AI and algorithms might perpetuate racisms which will take place in 10 different countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, with different formats, such as edit-a-thons, podcasts and texts.
In Nigeria, the organisation partners with the Wikimedia UG Nigeria.
Interested applicants are encouraged to tap from the benefits of learning about Wikipedia and taking up the important task of adding knowledge to the world’s largest online reference that are relevant to them. Thereby increasing visibility and representation of topics and languages which are important to both Women and Africans at large
The organisation which however, stated that those eligible to contest must need to have access to a computer and a stable internet connection, noted that although the basic training edit-a-thon is geared towards women, male applicants will be accepted when slots are still available.
