AWKA Township Stadium Anambra will be ready for commission by next year.
Anambra State governor, Chief Willie Obiano, gave the assurance at Governor’s Lodge, Onitsha, when members of the newly inaugurated Caretaker Committee for Anambra Football Association paid him a courtesy visit, yesterday.
According to him, what will result from the ongoing work at the construction site will be an ultramodern sports edifice.
Gov. Obiano used the visit to announce the establishment of both male and female Anambra football teams, the Anambra Bombers and Anambra Babes respectively and urged members of the committee to contribute their quota in the project of repositioning football in Anambra State.
Gov. Obiano equally stated that the project will be delivered in 11 months’ time.
The governor added that the project is part of the legacies his administration would leave behind in demonstrating his commitment to sports as not only a tool to youth development but also a vehicle of entrepreneurship.
Speaking further, Gov. Obiano stated that no investment would be too much in the sports, explaining that his administration had laid strong foundation in the sector to ensure that Anambra State returns to past glory.
He promised to continue investing in sports development given the talents that abound in the state, particularly in football, in order to rekindle massive youth interest and participation.
The governor also commended Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and Anambra State Sports Development Commission.
He said that they have a 90 days mandate to pilot the affairs of football management in the state within the the period, they will conduct the elections, saying that he deemed it fit to present them to him.
Speaking earlier, Chairman of Anambra Sports Development Commission and leader of the delegation, Chief Oli recalled that turnaround of sports in Anambra has been unprecedented in the past two years.
According to him, the association has come a long way having been repositioned to enviable height by Gov. Obiano.
Caretaker Committee Chairman of Anambra Football Association, Emeka Okeke thanked Gov. Obiano for receiving the team, pointing out that they have already launched the Anambra football campaign to canvass grassroots support for football development.
Okeke later presented football and jerseys to the governor.
