In Edo: Youths protest UNIBEN student’s death
… Pastor Adeboye flayed for comment
YOUTHS in Edo State yesterday marched through the streets of Benin City down to Police headquarters in protest over the death of a 100 level student of the University of Benin, Vera Omozuwa.
Omozua’s death which occurred on Thursday following her rape at the Edo State chapter of Redeemed Christian Church of God building.
This has put the Redeemed Christians Church of God (RCCG)’s General Overseas, Enoch Adebayo into the centre of severe criticisms from some aggrieved Nigerians.
Citizens who were visibly angered by the death of the Omozua at the Redeemed church believe the pastor did not do much to forestall the incident before it happened.
In a Twitter message, user @koleosoibukun asked why the cleric cannot use the power of God to fish out the perpetrators.
Some other Nigerians have joined in the social media criticisms of Pastor Adeboye after he came out to condemn the killing of Vera Omozuwa.
Condemning the heinous crime, Pastor Adeboye said the church is already looking into the matter and urged everyone to stay calm. He also prayed for the family of the deceased.
Another Twitter message from @flosek4u says, though hands are on deck to bring perpetrators to book, it is not reassuring enough.
According to the message, “Televangelists call out people’s names, addresses and phone numbers on TV. But they never use this “power” when it really matters. Baba has “prophetic anointing”, why not use this to fish out the criminals? This is a chance to prove the potency of Yahweh.”
The message however assured that the perpetrators would be apprehended soon because they desecrated the house of God and also committed murder.
It will be recalled that the 22-year-old Omozuwa, died a few days after her rape in the church.
Police assurances to the public to go after all behind the heinous crime seems to be bearing fruits as one arrest was made yesterday to that effect while further pledge has been made that none of the perpetrators will escape the full wrath of the law.
Adeboye while sympathising with the family of the deceased, noted that he is praying for the bereaved family and also doing everything in his capacity to work with authorities in bringing perpetrators of the act to book.
Edo Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has assured residents that the police command in the state is on the matter and that in no time, Omozuwa’s killers will all be tracked, arrested, and prosecuted.
