MANAGING Director, Anambra State Waste Management Authority (ASWAMA),Amechi Akorah has appealed to residents of Awka North Local Government Area to desist from indiscriminate waste disposal.
“Cleanliness is very important toward healthy living, especially in this pandemic era.” Mr Akorah said this while being interviewed by newsmen in Awka.
He noted that the agency was determined to maintain clean and healthy environment in the area.
The MD observed that communities that share borders with Awka bear the weight of population surge and consequently experience rise in their municipal waste generation.
The communities are Isuaniocha, Mgbakwu, Amanuke and Ebenebe.
“As some residents leave for work to Awka; they bring in huge volumes of wastes and dump them on the roads that lead to the city.
“Our trash pickers have cleared accumulated heaps of refuse at Okpuno and Isuaniocha bridge axis with a view to taking our operations into interiors of the LGAs.
“Everybody should bag their wastes and dispose them only at designated points for onward evacuation by the agency in order to achieve healthy environment,” Akorah insisted.
The ASWAMA MD noted that he had contacted President-General of Isuaniocha, Mr Frank Ofobikem to designate a site for location of waste bins for the community for more effective service delivery.
