Orumba-North local government area of Anambra state yesterday joined the campaign against the world’s most current dreaded virus to safeguard the area from the menace of the infectious disease .
The official flag-off ceremony of the campaign which was held at Amorkpala health centre , attracted a handful of Orumba-North constituents where the lawmaker representing the constituency , Hon.Emeka Aforka , the traditional ruler of Oko community Prof.Laz Ekwueme and a few other individuals tutored locals on the most effective ways to prevent the scourge of Coronavirus in the area .
The exercise also extended to Eke-Oko market where Hon.Emeka Aforka distributed tap buckets , liquid soaps , hand-sanitizers , nose-masks and a host of other prevention kits to the traders , urging them to stay safe as well as ensure they maintained considerable distance during social interactions because coronavirus , according to him , is real and deadly .
Aforka stated that the essence of his constituency campaign was to break the chain of spread of the deadly disease called coronavirus , stressing that health tips on covid19 were given by volunteer health practitioners on the best possible ways to prevent the contagion in accordance with World Health Organization standards .
He said Presidents-General of communities and traditional rulers graced the event and equally added their voices to the campaign against the covid19 pandemic .
The lawmaker said , ” I pleaded with traders not to increase the cost of food items and they shouldn’t see this as an opportunity to hike the prices of food items . They should see it an opportunity to show patriotism , love and also sell things at affordable prices in order to help our people cushion the adverse effects of the Coronavirus pandemic . ‘
” I also educated them on preventive ways of avoiding coronavirus so that it will not enter into Orumba-North because as it stands now we have not recorded any case of coronavirus in Anambra state let alone Orumba-North constituency . ‘
Aforka further disclosed that he also told the people about Governor Willie Obiano’s passion evident in the provision of stimulus packages for citizens who were downtrodden and can not meet their daily needs especially in the prevailing circumstance .
According to him , the people of Orumba-North constituency were equally told that the governor has provided and equipped about three isolation centres in Umuawulu/Mbaukwu NYSC camp , Onitsha general hospital and Teaching Hospital Amaku Awka as well as surge centres in the state for the containment of any outbreaks .
He said , ” I made them to understand that coronavirus is real and deadly . So our people understood the need personal hygiene . I also made them to understand that there is need for washing of hands regularly to avoid contacting coronavirus . I used the opportunity also to distribute some preventive materials and urged the people to observe social distancing . “
” I made them understand that coronavirus is in Nigeria but governnent is making frantic efforts to contain it . I also told them that the decision of the Federal governnent and Anambra state government for people to stay at home is just to break the chain of spread .
The lawmaker who stressed that there was certainly no need for any form of gathering in this covid19 era , maintained that he would take the campaign to other communities , markets , churches and all other places in Orumba-North to ensure that the message on prevention of coronavirus traversed the nooks and crannies of the council area .
Aforka said the sixteen communities in Orumba-North together with the four major markets of Eke-Oko , Afor-Udo Nanka , Eke-Awgbu and Afor-Ufuma markets and other community markets such as Nkwo-Omor , Oye post Ndikelionwu , Oye Ndiowu and other markets in the constituency will all receive sensitisation and covid19 prevention gadgets to ensure that Orumba-North is protected from the terminal consequences of coronavirus .
