Gov Willie Obiano has assured ndi Anambra that the state government is committed to preventing the spread of Coronavirus in the state.
Gov Obiano said this in a special broadcast today, April 2, 2020 at his country home in Aguleri, Anambra East LGA.
In his address, the Governor said that his administration took decisive steps against the pandemic by announcing the suspension of schools, bars, clubs and other social gatherings.
The Governor confirmed that there’s no recorded case of Coronavirus in the state. He stated that six samples were sent from the state to Irua, Edo state for tests with four returned negative while two others are expected soon. He also said that three new samples have been sent for tests”.
The Governor stated that the state has set up well equipped protective and surge centres in preparation for any eventuality. He mentioned the conversion of the main hall of the NYSC camp at Umuawulu/Mbaukwu into a 250 bed protective centre.
Onitsha General hospital with a 16 bed space has also been equipped and in use as another protective centre. The Onitsha centre has in addition a fully equipped high infectious disease unit HDIU and other sections for easy expansion.
“The protective centre at COOUTH Amaku-Awka is being fitted to standard just in case we have an outbreak”, the Governor said.
The Governor expressed gratitude to Fidelity bank Plc and Access bank Plc for volunteering to equip and upgrade the surge centres at Umueri and Ekwulobia to a 60-bed facility in line with the World Health Organization’s standard on Coronavirus.
On economic stimulus packages, Governor Obiano said that apart from the 36,000 bags of rice provided for the elderly and the 10% tax rebate, “we shall soon commence the distribution of 3 million masks to residents in the 181 communities in the state.
“Our intention in handing out 3 million masks is to ensure that after the 14-day shutdown of the state, no one will step out of their home without wearing a facial mask. The Czech Republic is relying largely on a heavy use of facial masks to minimize the incidence of Coronavirus in its territory. These masks shall be made by our own tailors carefully selected from each of the 181 communities of Anambra State.The modalities for the manufacturing and distribution of the masks shall be worked out and announced subsequently”.
The Governor also said that the state government will commence the fumigation of the 63 markets in Anambra State while the traders are at home. “This will help to reduce the toxicity of the business environment and minimize the exposure of our people to different kinds of infections.
He further announced a two-month waiver to Keke and shuttle bus operators in the state on the usual permits they pay. The grace period covers the months of April and May, 2020.
To meet the educational needs of puplis at home, the Governor announced the partnership of ABS Radio/TV and the Ministry of Basic Education to launch a programme titled “Anambra Teaching on Air.” The programme will be a stop-gap measure to aid the educational programmes of pupils.
Gov Obiano thanked illustrious sons and daughters of Anambra who have supported the state government in the fight against pandemic. He prayed others to do the same.
Concluding, the Governor encouraged ndi Anambra to observe the established hygiene protocols dutifully. He asked them to come together as one to fight the pandemic.
“I urge you to see the threat of Coronavirus as the greatest threat to us all. I urge you therefore, to come together as one and shut out this pandemic from Anambra State. Ndi Anambra, we can do it if we truly come together. We shall win this battle and eventually win this war!”
