THE 12th edition of the Mubadala World Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi takes place between December 19-21, bringing a rock-solid pre-season field as always for more than a decade. Since the first Mubadala WTC tournament in January 2009, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic claimed four titles each, with two more for Andy Murray and one for Kevin Anderson who is the only champion outside the ‘Big 4’.

The organizers had been working hard on signing the most prominent names for the upcoming edition, with the world’s leading players Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic heading the action ahead of Stefanos Tsitsipas and Gael Monfils as Daniil Medvedev had to withdraw due to an injury.

Hyeon Chung is the fifth confirmed player and we are waiting to see who will replace Daniil and face Chung in the quarters. World no. 1 Rafael Nadal feels ready to chase the first Mubadala WTC crown since 2016, finishing the season as the year-end no.

1 for the fifth time and hoping for more of the same in 2020, especially if he wins enough points in the first half of the year. A year ago, Rafa lost to Kevin Anderson and skipped the event in 2017, returning to one of his favorite tournaments and seeking a good run that would give him momentum ahead of the ATP Cup and the Australian Open where he played in the final in January.

Rafa conquered the crown here in January 2010 and 2011, adding two in 2016 (won both January and December editions) to stand at the top before Novak Djokovic joined him on four titles last year, beating Kevin Anderson in the final.

“I have always had a great time and enjoyed every minute at the Mubadala event,” Nadal said. “It is a great way to start the season and getting ready this year for the ATP Cup. In previous years, it was my entrance to the new season, continuing to other events as well and I always felt this tournament was getting better every year; I am sure this year will be no exception to that.”
