ANAMBRA House of Assembly has passed a Bill establishing Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUTH), Awka into Law.
It will be known and cited as Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (Repeal and Re-Enactment) Law, 2019.
Coming as an executive Bill sponsored by state government, it was passed by the Committee of the Whole House at Tuesday’s plenary on shortly after a report of House Committee on Health which vetted the Bill.
Presiding over the passage, which went in a unanimous voice vote, Speaker Uchenna Okafor led lawmakers through thorough a scrutiny of the bill during which inputs were made into the document.
In his contribution on the floor, Majority Leader of Anambra House of Assembly, Dr. Nnamdi Okafor explained that the Bill seeks to essentially upgrade the facility to a world class teaching hospital that meets health needs of ndi Anambra.
Apart from repeal and re-enact, the new Law also provides that the hospital should adhere to global best practices and highest standards in medical services, training and re-training core and support staffs, interns, post graduate medical doctors, certified and degree programmes for nurses.
It also provides for continuous research into all aspects of medical and allied services, with composition of a Governing Board and Medical Advisory Committee of the teaching hospital as well as qualifications and functions of the management at all times strictly done under due process.
